Nancy Poole Wins RBS Scholarship

leave a comment »

Last week, Nancy Poole, a second year MLIS student, was named as one of the recipients for a scholarship to the Rare Book School (RBS) at the University of Virginia.

Nancy discovered Medieval illuminated Haggadot, orders of service for the Pesach (Passover) holiday, in her LIS History of the Book (HOB) course, taken in Spring 2008.  “One of my first classes here,” she said.  Nancy had been learning to read Hebrew, so she opted do a comparison of two Haggadot originating from different geographical areas in the 14th century, as a project for HOB.  That led to a practicum at Duke University’s Perkins Library over the summer where Nancy collected metadata on Medieval Latin and Hebrew manuscripts, as well as 17th century English court documents. “ It was helpful to have had four years of Latin and I loved the work,” she laughed, “but I’m afraid I became obsessed with illuminated manuscripts. As a result, Professors Joe Rosenblum and Bill Finley suggested that I look into RBS.” There, world-renowned scholars teach courses in codicology, Latin paleography, illumination, bookmaking and binding methods, and many other areas. There are a limited number of scholarships available annually: each is good for one course offered in either of the next two years following the award.

Nancy hopes to study either codiology or Latin paleography.
